Tooth & Wisdom Tooth Extraction in Aundh, Pune
Simple and surgical extractions, including impacted wisdom teeth, under local anaesthesia — with clear aftercare and follow-up at Braces and Beyond, Aundh.
Tooth extraction removes a tooth that cannot be saved or is causing problems — commonly a badly broken or infected tooth, a painful or impacted wisdom tooth, or a tooth removed to create space during orthodontic treatment. At Braces and Beyond, Aundh, both simple and surgical extractions, including wisdom teeth, are performed by Dr. Chinmayi Desale, MDS Orthodontics, under local anaesthesia.
When extraction is recommended
- Decay or a fracture that has gone beyond what a filling, root canal or crown can repair
- Advanced gum disease that has left a tooth loose
- A wisdom tooth that keeps getting infected, is decaying, or is damaging the tooth next to it
- Crowding, where removing a tooth creates the space braces or aligners need
Saving a natural tooth is usually the better option when it is possible — see root canal treatment. Extraction is for teeth that cannot be predictably saved.
Simple vs surgical extraction
A simple extraction removes a tooth that is fully visible in the mouth: it is loosened and lifted out. A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth has not fully come through the gum or is impacted in the bone — common with lower wisdom teeth — and may involve a small incision or removing the tooth in sections. An X-ray before the procedure tells us which one you need.
Wisdom teeth: when to leave them alone
Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. A wisdom tooth that has come through fully, sits in a good position, is pain-free and can be cleaned properly can usually stay. Removal makes sense for repeated gum infection around a partly erupted tooth, decay in the wisdom tooth or the tooth in front of it, cysts, or pain that keeps coming back. If yours is not causing a problem, we will tell you so.
Recovery and aftercare
- Bite on the gauze pad as instructed to control bleeding
- For the first 24 hours, avoid spitting, vigorous rinsing, smoking and drinking through a straw — they can dislodge the blood clot
- Stick to soft, cool food at first and chew on the other side
- After a surgical extraction, swelling usually peaks around the second or third day and then settles
Call the clinic if bleeding does not stop, or if pain gets worse instead of better after a few days — that can be a sign of a dry socket, which is treatable.
Replacing a missing tooth
A back tooth removed without replacement can let neighbouring teeth drift and tilt over time. If the extracted tooth needs replacing, the options are a dental implant, a bridge, or a denture. Wisdom teeth and teeth removed for orthodontic space do not need replacing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does tooth extraction hurt?
The area is numbed with local anaesthesia, so you feel pressure rather than pain during the extraction. Some soreness afterwards is normal and is managed with the pain relief advised at the clinic.
Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
No. Wisdom teeth that are fully erupted, well positioned, pain-free and cleanable can usually stay. Removal is recommended for repeated infection, decay, damage to the neighbouring tooth, or recurring pain.
How long does it take to heal after an extraction?
The gum usually closes over within one to two weeks; the bone underneath takes longer to fill in. Surgical wisdom tooth extractions take longer to settle than simple extractions.
Can I go to work the next day?
After a simple extraction, most people can. After a surgical wisdom tooth extraction, many people prefer to rest for a day or two while swelling settles.
